The simplicity of the uncommon (Maarten Willems)
Despite the visual diversity in the designs of René van Zuuk Architekten in the past ten years, a few constant factors
however are manifest. The first common denominator is the desire of both clients and the architect for ‘something special’.
From René van Zuuks very first project, his own house Psyche, he has launched himself as a designer of eye-catchers.
Everything about Psyche is special; the unusual material combinations, the design language, the fragmented way of sponsoring.
Underlying in all his designs is the continuous search for methods to create a building as interesting as possible with
minimised costs. His aim is to unite a maximised degree of ‘particularity’ of the final product with simplicity in
manufacturing.
The knowledge of building production technology, the field in which René van Zuuk graduated, is of crucial importance.
Almost every project derives its brilliance from an idea, an invention that initiates and boosts the design process.
A closer analysis of these triggers reveals that they can be clustered in three main themes: structure, production technology
and construction.
The designs by René van Zuuk of the past ten years are striking, divergent and unique, both in the assignment,
the interpretation and the implementation. All of his designs show an evolutionary
learning process and a balanced symbiosis between shape, structure, construction and production.
