Experimental Architecture Biennial #4: Digital Tactics

The fourth Experimental Architecture Biennial will be formally launched in mid-June under the Digital Tactics banner. Specifically, on Thursday, June 13, at 7 p.m., an exhibition presenting fifteen creatives from across the world will open. It will include representatives from the top Los Angeles-based SCI-Arc school; the Neri Oxman studio at the MIT Media Lab in Cambridge, Massachusetts; the Dutch UNStudio; the British-based Zaha Hadid Architects; the Vienna-based Moh architects; architects and teachers from the University of Innsbruck; and architects and teachers from the Bartlett School of Architecture in London. Numerous creatives will be present at the launch, as well as at an international experimental architecture symposium held the following day in the Kotěra Lecture Hall at the Faculty of Architecture, Czech Technical University in Prague (CUT), held under the auspices of Belgian-born British architect Gilles Retsin. Entrance to the conference is free of charge for students this year. Over the subsequent three days, a workshop will take place headed by Bartlett School architecture expert Manuel Jimenez Garcia, and Starsk Lara (IAAC Barcelona). Two outdoor experimental site-specific installations will also form part of the Biennial – the work of UCL Bartlett's Material Architecture Lab and Czech architects Jindřich Ráftl and Jan Tůma. The latter will also introduce a part of the exhibition specifically devoted to the Czech Republic’s currently-under-construction pavilion for EXPO 2020 in Dubai.

The Experimental Architecture Biennial in Prague is an international platform for showcasing current trends and architectural design tactics, emerging in response to the new philosophies and technologies of a changing world. The event seeks to generate interest in architectural thinking that transcends narrow local assessment criteria. This fourth Biennial, entitled Digital Tactics, centres on a world of architecture and design in which the initial wave of enthusiasm for digital technology has been replaced by a sense that such tools are routine and unconscious parts of our day-to-day lives. Computer designers have become “humanised”, transforming into designers, architects and fashion designers. And robotic technologies have moved beyond industrial production and onto the desktops of creatives and young scientists. Digital design has become a natural part of the creative process, and digital technology an integrated component of the construction of buildings.

17/7 – 19/7  WORKSHOP: Robo De-light, Faculty of Architecture, CTU in Prague

fee: 700 CZK

Registration form

Participants will learn about the universal robot UR5. On a simple one curve model, the control of the robot will be explained. Using a more detailed volumetric model we'll explore how to divide it into curves that the robot can draw in space.
In the next phase, the participants will design their own more interesting objects, which will be represented by the movement of the robotic hand.

In the final stage of the workshop, the Robot UR 5 gets an RGB directional light, and each part of the model will determine where in which direction and in what colour and how strongly the light will shine.

The result of the workshop will be colourful photographs and videos, where the UR 5 drawing will be captured in the darkroom using long exposure photography.
