CLOUD 69

CLOUDS OF WORK BY A69

(1994 – 2019)

The studio A69 – architekti has been celebrating the 25th anniversary this year. It is an occasion to make a brief inventory and, more importantly, a reason to contemplate. It is clear that, although our built projects and designs have not been losing touch with the course of events on the contemporary stage, work methods have started to qualify against the current trends.  None of the cofounders of our studio mastered any computer software used to design and document architecture. All ideas come to existence on paper, physically modelled. Computers serve us to record and verify our ideas.

Creating has still been searching, variating, ever faster and freer outside the exact world of ones and zeros.

Exhibition Concept

“This time, we decided to present our architecture in the phase of its outset. We succumbed to our archives and rolled out thousands of old sketches, alternatives drawings, details and technical solutions. We were not stunned just by the quantity but also the omnipresent frolicsomeness, poetics, zest for searching, errors and finding. Sketching paper rustled under our hands, giving us the smell of pencils, crayons. We realized that computers could not do this so far. And, moreover, that this type of work has started disappearing. So, we decided to present this particular method of our work. We consistently try to avoid deceptions and delusions of virtuality and new media. We present physical, hand-made work“, say A69 – architekti about the exhibition concept.

It is not just a matter of the visual appearance, but also circumstances relating to it. Sketches are displayed on strips of authentic “tracing paper” whispering in the draught, freshly sharpened crayons smell. A sound of a pencil sketching on a sheet of paper sounds in the background. “We materialized the clouds of work by a thousand three hundred and fifty-six strips of tracing paper with four hundred and eighty-six sketches into a form of a cloud. And we named it, a bit sarcastically, a CLOUD.

Pop up store

While a “cloud” of sketches dominates the main exhibition space, the installation in the foreground goes even further beyond their time of origin: it is a coffee shop, a studio, a bookshop or a design shop. If the exhibition makes someone wish to do some sketching, one can get everything one needs.

Book

A book called ”Handwork” is published upon the occasion of this exhibition. Three hundred sketches selected by the architects in cooperation with art publicist Petr Volf and graphic designer Tomáš Machek (side 2) are published in the architectural series of the Kant Publishers. The book – a sketchbook is a separate story of a cloud, torrential rain that showered from the A69’s cloud. The book is a unique witness to 25-year work by A69 – architekti illustrating their architectural, conceptual and visual thinking.

Perfume

To frame the exhibition, A69 – architekti add another dimension to their works and ideas: fragrance. In cooperation with Kateřina Šantrochová, A69 embalmed the display with the scent of freshly sharpened crayons and developed a unique series of perfumes inspired by the personalities of architects and their symphony called LIBELA (builder’s level).

Immediately after graduation from the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University in Prague (ČVUT) Ing.arch. Boris Redčenkov (*1969) and Ing.arch. Prokop Tomášek (*1969) established ATELIER 69 – ARCHITEKTI in 1994. Jaroslav Wertig (*1969) joined them as a partner in 1997. ATELIER 69 – ARCHITEKTI transformed to A69 – architekti s.r.o. in 2003.

Aside from the same year of birth, the three architects share the ambition to design authentic architecture responding to the location, time, and circumstances of its origin.

During 25 years of existence, the studio has built tens of projects and designed hundreds of projects of all possible scales, sizes, and typologies. Aside from designing and building, the architects publish, promote, and lecture.
